NEET 2026 Exam Cancelled Over Paper Leak Allegations; 23 Lakh Students Affected Across India

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially announced the cancellation of the NEET 2026 examination conducted on May 3 following serious allegations of question paper leaks and large-scale malpractices. The decision has created shockwaves across the country, affecting nearly 23 lakh students who appeared for the highly competitive medical entrance examination.
NEET, or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, is considered one of the most important entrance examinations in India for students seeking admission into MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses. Every year, lakhs of students spend months and even years preparing for the examination with hopes of securing seats in top medical colleges. However, this year’s examination has become one of the most controversial in the history of Indian education.
Reports of irregularities first surfaced from Rajasthan, where allegations emerged that the NEET question paper had been leaked nearly a month before the exam. Similar complaints later emerged from several other states, raising serious concerns about the credibility and transparency of the examination process. Images and alleged copies of question papers began circulating on social media platforms, triggering outrage among students, parents, and educational organizations.
Several student groups and political parties demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. They argued that honest students who prepared sincerely for the examination had been unfairly affected due to organized malpractice networks. Public pressure intensified after claims surfaced that multiple exam centers were involved in irregular activities during the examination.
Following preliminary investigations, the NTA stated that the integrity of the May 3 NEET examination had been compromised. The agency announced that allowing the results to stand would not be fair to students nationwide. As a result, the examination has been officially cancelled, marking the first time in India’s history that the NEET exam has been entirely scrapped due to malpractice allegations.
The NTA has also confirmed that a re-examination will be conducted. The revised examination date will be announced later. Students will not be required to pay any additional examination fee, and their previously generated registration numbers will remain valid for the retest.
Meanwhile, the central government has ordered a CBI investigation into the alleged paper leak and examination fraud. Authorities are expected to identify the individuals and organizations responsible for the malpractice. Strict legal action is likely against those found guilty of compromising the integrity of the national-level examination.
The cancellation has also disrupted the medical admission process across India. Delays in counselling, seat allotment, and academic schedules are now expected. Many students have expressed anxiety and emotional stress over the uncertainty surrounding their future. Preparing again for the examination within a short period may become a major challenge for aspirants.
The controversy has once again raised questions about the security and management of large-scale competitive examinations in India. Experts and education activists are now demanding stronger digital security measures, transparent monitoring systems, and stricter accountability mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future.
As the country awaits the re-examination schedule and the outcome of the investigation, millions of students and parents hope for a fair and transparent process that protects the future of deserving candidates.
