Karnataka MSMEs Hit by Double Blow as Fuel Prices and Minimum Wages Surge

by udhayatoday  •  May 26, 2026

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Karnataka are facing severe financial pressure due to repeated fuel price hikes and a sharp increase in minimum wages announced by the State government. Industry representatives describe the situation as a “double blow” for businesses already struggling with declining demand, rising operational expenses and competition from cheaper imports.

Fuel prices have increased four times within just 11 days, leading to higher transportation and logistics costs. Industries dependent on diesel generators and fuel-based machinery are also witnessing a major rise in production expenses. Business owners say the increase has affected everything from raw materials to water transportation charges.

According to Kamalesh Mehta, General Secretary of the Kumbalagodu Industries Association, many MSMEs are already suffering losses between 15% and 20%. He stated that most small businesses operate on profit margins of only 6% to 10%, and the latest cost increases have completely wiped out those earnings. Prices of petroleum-based materials such as polymers and plastics have reportedly increased by nearly 40% to 50%.

Industry leaders have also expressed concern over Karnataka’s revised minimum wage notification, which raises wages by nearly 60% on average. They argue that the move places Karnataka-based MSMEs at a disadvantage compared to neighbouring States like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Several companies are reportedly struggling to meet delivery deadlines due to the ongoing crisis, resulting in penalties, cancellation of orders and even blacklisting by clients. Some factory owners are now considering shutting down operations and leasing out industrial properties instead of continuing production.

Industrial associations have urged both the Union and State governments to reconsider the timing of these price and wage hikes, warning that many MSMEs may not survive if the current situation continues for the next few months.
